Dear Class of 1985:
Twenty years ago, several hundred acne-faced kids walked off a football field at Canyon Del Oro High School with a diploma in hand and a faint idea of where to go from there. Since that day, Berlin has become one city; the Material Girl gave birth; the Walkman turned into an I-Pod; Al Gore invented the Internet; your MTV can now be “Tivo’d”; Yugio has replaced the Rubix cube; and Michael Jackson -- well, what can you say? When New Wave is playing on the “oldies” station, you know that you’ve taken a few laps around the sun.
Every once in a great while, you’re given the chance to put your fast-forwarding life on hold and take a trip back to your past. Now is that time. It’s time to put your bifocals down and dust the Ray Bans off. It’s time to cancel your game at the golf club so that you can return to the days of the Breakfast Club. It’s time to wear your sunglasses at night and to watch every breath you take.
Go ahead -- pull out that Yearbook. Why did you wear those Sperry Topsiders without socks? Was that you in the black glam-rock concert T-shirt (slightly faded) sporting a Mohawk? My God -- did you really wear that argyle sweater and Penny loafers?
It’s time to fly back to the nest for a weekend to relax and remember. Set the bills to one side and leave your dog with the neighbor because we’ve got a reunion weekend planned for you. Here are the details:
Friday night, June 10, there will be a casual mixer upstairs in the Canyon Suites at El Conquistador. This will be a casual time to visit and catch up. Saturday night, June 11, we will meet in the Sundance Room at El Conquistador for a fun evening of dining and dancing.
Why must you come? See old friends that you’ve lost track of. Hear stories about CDO classmates of yore. (E.g. “She had how many kids?” “He became a what?” “You mean, she’s actually in jail?” Etc.) Tell your own story. (E.g. “I work. I eat. I go to bed. And then I get up and go to work again.”) If nothing else, show up to satisfy your own burning curiosity to find out what twenty years has done to each of us. (E.g. How much of that feathered hair have you lost? Would that mini skirt even get past your knees today?) In any event, if you’re single and still looking, who knows what you might find?
We’ll see you on June 10 and 11.
